The Apartment at Ours

The Apartment at Ours Fitzroy is where the story began.

A large one bedroom apartment above a shopfront on Johnston Street that I renovated (slightly) and styled to be a home for some of my favourite artists, makers, designers and brands from around the city.

Its original function was an accomodation to host guests in a space where they would feel at home in our city. A custom built dining table, bed and full length smoked glass mirror by Billy Furniture. A huge corner sofa configuration from Monde wrapped around a huge square coffee table by Modern Times. A custom built timber horn and sound system by Alex Earl. Plates, bowls, cups, mugs, cutlery and other bits and pieces from Fazeek, Mud, Skydiver, Terror Twilight, Coffee Supreme and Smith Street Bazaar. Guests were welcomed with flowers from around the corner, bread from Falco, butter from St David, wine from Blackhearts and Sparrows and fresh Suku sheets and dressing gowns.

The bathroom was fitted with a salvaged church window I repurposed as a shower screen, which we had beautifully backlit by Tolliday electrical - Justin also fitted the many other beautiful light fittings through the house. We used a large vintage concrete shower base, with original layers of peeling paint, as a kitchen sink on the huge kitchen island. The entryway and staircase up to the first floor was painted with a green and white pattern, which matched the green of the perforated metal table in the courtyard where the concrete was painted coral pink making a beautiful place to sit under the grapevines.

The space quickly evolved to include a gallery and be used as an event space, shoot space and home for many artists from around the city.
